Domenico Ghirardelli bought the block in 1893 for his chocolate company's headquarters. William and Lurline Roth bought it in 1962 to stop an apartment building, and Lawrence Halprin turned it into shops and restaurants in 1964, the first major adaptive re-use project in the US.
